It has been a record-breaking day. Four rejection letters in one day! Amazing. I think everyone has been sitting on a huge slush pile over Christmas, and they're finally getting around to clearing it out. Although, one of these is back after only a month, when their listing in Writer's Market says it should take four months. Oh well.
I am reminded of a Peanuts cartoon I saw years ago. Snoopy is sitting on his dog house opening a letter. He pulls out a paper and reads, "Dear Author, Your writing stinks! What ever made you think we would even consider publishing garbage like this? Your story has got to be the worst mess ever made of the English language. Do not ever send anything to us again! Sincerely, the Editors" Snoopy puts down the letter and thinks for a moment, then says, "It's probably a form letter."
Well, two of my letters today were form letters. The other two were postcards I'd sent out with boxes for the editors to check indicating if they would like to see my manuscript or not. They wouldn't. Life goes on. Mailings go on. I'll send the manuscripts out again. (Jacob and the Magic Cape and Moon Flowers) In the mean time I'm writing about 1000 words a day on the YA novel I'm writing. And I remind myself that both of these books have received very nice, personal letters from other publishers recently. They will probably be published eventually. If not, hopefully something else will.
Have a great day! I'm off to see to Bethany who is having a melt down. (Wish me luck.)
